Iceland is located on the Mid-Atlantic ridge on the spreading boundaries of the American plate and Eurasian plate. Most of the ridge is under sea level but beneath Iceland has been located a mantle plum appearing as a hot-spot, making Iceland above sea level.
Because of this, volcanic eruption are quite common in Iceland and as an Icelander, I have been able to experience by myself some of them.
