The Yellow Submarine – Guli Kafbáturinn – is my old kayak that was nit used for quite many years. Bought in year 2010 and used somewhat in year 2011 but not very much. I felt unsafe on the boat and it was just kept in a storage area and almost forgotten for more than 10 years.
Type of boat: Prijon Kodiak. Now a bit difficult to find the specs since the boat was discontinued some years ago. The name of its heritage is Prijon Grizzly if I understand correctly
- Material: HTP
- Length: 518cm/17′
- Width: 59cm/23″
- Volume: 390l/103
- Cockpit: 2 (92cm)
- Weight of the boat: 28 kg
- Paddler-Weight: 80-110 kg
- Gal Max Capacity: 150kg/330lb
I have had some bad experience of the stability of that boat and it seem to be not so extremely uncommon as can be seen at least here. After some web search I was able to understand the problem was most likely more my lack of experience than the lack of stability of the boat. What I learned is that the stability can be both primary and secondary. The Kodiak is better in secondary stability while the sit on top kayaks as my other one, is stronger in the primary stability.
A long but not very interesting video from Lake Helluvatn and Elliðavatn, September 2024. Uninteresting since nothing happened and everything went well.

I have in general had some problems with this kayak… starting in getting in to it and then remain stable and finally getting out of it. Some related videos:
- How to get in to and out of the kayak. Just the easy way described.
- Entering and exiting a kayak.
- Kayak stability. More theoretical description.
- Understanding kayak stability. Describing the difference of primary and secondary stability. The video there describes pretty well why and how the secondary stability is vital when paddling in rough conditions. Also making understandable that you can’t have both extremely good primary and secondary stability. In easy conditions you only need the primary stability but in more difficult condition it is better to have the secondary stability.
